2016 - New Zealand is one of the best countries in the world! Auckland, NZ, Dr Mobiles LImited 0800429429 iPhone Repair

New Zealand
has once again been named one of the best countries in the world.

In the first ever Best Countries rankings from US News, Aotearoa made the list at number 11, narrowly missing out on the top ten.

The report was based on how global perceptions defined a country and looked at a number of characteristics and impressions. More than 16,000 people from around the world were surveyed.

We were beaten by our neighbour Australia, which was ranked at number six. The results were divided into a number of categories.

For adventure, New Zealand was ranked at number five, after Brazil, Italy, Spain and Thailand.

The report said that each visitor to New Zealand would spend $2842 on tourism during their visit.

Aotearoa also performed well in the categories of citizenship (number eight), open for business (number six) and quality of life (number six).
Despite our interesting culture and history, we didn't do too well when it came to heritage - coming in at number 34. Our low ratings for history and cultural attractions could perhaps be explained by New Zealand being a relatively young country compared to others on the list.

We also scored low when it came to power (number 34), receiving a big zero for "strong military" and "politically influential".

However, our country was described in glowing terms such as "picturesque" by the report - although it seemed confused over whether Auckland or Wellington was the capital.
"The Kiwi spirit and culture are personified by such notable natives as Sir Edmund Hillary who first climbed Mount Everest in 1953 and Lord Rutherford, who split the atom," it read.
"The bungee jump, Hamilton Jet boat, referee's whistle and frozen meat are also credited to New Zealanders."

It's certainly not the first time our greatness has been recognised. A global UN report in 2015 ranked New Zealand the ninth best country in the world - an honour we share with Canada.

Also last year, Auckland's Waiheke Island was named as the fifth best destination in the world by Lonely Planet.

Cat-sized rat discovered in South Pacific

If you have a tendency to jump shrieking on to a table when you see a mouse, look away now: a species of rat the size of a cat has been discovered.

The outsized rodent, which has been named the Bosavi woolly rat, is almost a metre long and weighs in at 1.5kg. It was found trapped inside the crater of Mt Bosavi, an extinct volcano on Papua New Guinea, which has been described as a "lost world" in which scientists have found some 40 previously undiscovered species.

The rat has dense silvery grey fur and the shape of its teeth suggests it is primarily a vegetarian. It is thought to live in subterranean nests.

The animal was found by a BBC Natural History Unit film crew and Dr Kristofer Helgen, of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC.

"This is one of the world's largest rats," he said. "It is a true rat, related to the same kind you find in the city sewers, but a heck of a lot bigger."

Despite the BBC's claims, there have been previous reports of the species existence.

In 2007 Kristofer Helgen, a scientist with the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, reported the rat was "about five times the size of a typical city rat".

Dr George McGavin, the head scientist of the BBC Natural History Unit, however, suggested the rodent was not aggressive.

"This rat was incredibly tame," he told the Guardian newspaper. "It just sat next to me nibbling on a piece of leaf. It won't have seen a human before."

Some of the other new species found include a fanged frog, a fish that grunts and a gecko. The fish has been called the henamo grunter because of the noises it makes with its swim bladder.

The Bosavi silky cuscus, a marsupial that lives up trees and feeds on fruits and leaves, was another creature not to feel threatened by the human visitors, climbing on to the shoulder of Steve Backshall, a climber and naturalist.

"I can't begin to describe how it feels to have an animal in my hands that in all probability has never before been seen by science," he told the Guardian. "Most biologists would consider it a great achievement to name one new species but at some points on this trip it seemed like everything we were looking at was new. The end of every day was like a massive party. It was very special."

Taken there by local trackers, the group stayed in the crater for two weeks in January to film a BBC series on Mt Bosavi called Lost Land of the Volcano.

The area was so remote the expedition team had to organise for fields of sweet potato and spinach to be planted in the jungle six months in advance so they would have a ready food source.

Weeks were also devoted to negotiations - which had to be translated into the local language, Kasua, spoken by fewer than 1000 people - to gain permission to cross land owned by local clans.

Teen robs store with banana, eats evidence! David Lim, Auckland

Sunday May 17, 2009

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina - Police say a North Carolina teen who was thwarted as he tried to rob a store with a banana ate it before they could arrive.

Winston-Salem authorities say 17-year-old John Szwalla held the banana under his shirt when he entered the store, saying he had a gun and demanded money, the Winston-Salem Journal reported.

Owner Bobby Ray Mabe says he and a customer jumped Szwalla, holding him until deputies arrived. While they waited, Mabe says the teen ate the banana.

Mabe says deputies took pictures of the banana peel. Forsyth County Sheriff's office spokesman Maj. Brad Stanley says deputies joked about charging Szwalla with destroying evidence.

Szwalla faces a charge of attempted armed robbery. Jail officials say he doesn't have an attorney.

Nokia E-71 PDA Phone: Power Tips and Shortcuts, David Lim, Auckland, New Zealand, GDI

It had been almost a month now since I switched from my good old Nokia N95 to the Nokia E71; I am still very excited about this little cool machine. I have search on New Zealand's Vodafone site and cannot find much power tool or shortcuts.

Well, these tips are well known, but for people who doesn’t know yet, here some keyboard shortcut for Nokia E71:

- Quick dou
ble press on the bottom left ‘number shift’ key locks it. Most useful when particularly navigating around the GMail app to invoke actions instead of keep pressing the button before every keystroke.

- Copy and paste can, in some situations be done with Ctrl+C (but you need to hold down Func+Chr+C to get this on the keyboard). You can highlight text (in edit situations) by holidng the shift key and moving the direction pad. Copy will appear as on of the softkey labels.

- Page up and page down are Ctrl+Up and Ctrl+Down. Again you access control by pressing the function key first (so Fn+Chr+Up on the keyboard). Doing this directly is awkward. You can press Fn then Ctrl+Up. If you doble tap the function key it becomes sticky (i.e. like cap locks and as describes above) and you can then do multiple page up and page downs easily.

- From the idle screen hold down # to switch between silent and general profiles. Press and hold down * to switch bluetooth on and off.

- Press Fn Key + Return Key for quick Mark/Unmark of items like Msg. emails etc. for deletion or moving.

- On keys that show a symbol or number, hold down the key to get it.

- When in locked mode you can hold the large center ’select’ key to get a large back lit time and date display w/o unlocking or needing to re lock.

- Pressing Shift + Backspace = delete letters after cursor

- In Notes and Messaging, press Fn (most left bottom button) + Spacebar = gives input option such as turn on/off predictive text, settings, writing language, input method.

- Hold down left soft key to read out new text messages.

What is the world's smallest street legal car?

Created by the Peel Engineering Company in 1962 the The Peel P50 is the world's smallest street legal car. The car is only 53 inches long and 39 inches wide and weighs a feathery 132 pounds. The Peel P50 can reach staggering speeds of 40 MPH on it's three wheels. The only drawback is the car has no reverse gear, but with the attached handle it's easy to maneuver it yourself.
