Apple to Replace Entire iPads for Batteries–What About iPhones?

Sibling site iPadinCanada.ca recently coveredhow Apple’s latest iPad has a new battery replacement policy. This policy will cost iPad owners $99 plus shipping to get their batteriesreplaced. But here’s the catch: Apple will replace the entire iPad (new or refurbished, we don’t know yet) instead of just swapping out the battery!

This differs from the existing iPhone battery replacement program that will only replace your iPhone battery. Now, for those who care about keeping their original device, the iPhone program is great. But if you’re an iPad owner and your battery dies, you can just get an entire replacement iPad.

What policy is better? Take a look at them below:

iPad:

“If your iPad requires service due to the battery’s diminished ability to hold an electrical charge, Apple will replace your iPad for a service fee.”

iPhone:

“If your iPhone requires service only because the battery’s ability to hold an electrical charge has diminished, Apple will service your iPhone for a service fee.”

What do you think? There are still unanswered questions as to what kind of iPad you will be getting, new or refurbed. Would you want a new replacement iPhone or just your battery swapped?

PayPal iPhone App Revamped–Now With Bump

For those of you who use the PayPal iPhone app, you will be pleased to know that the app just received a major update. The interface has been revamped and new features have been added, including the ability to use the Bump iPhone app to send payments.

Here’s the description on the latest update:

PayPal’s mobile money application is
the faster way to send money with your iPhone® to friends and family anytime, anywhere. It’s much easier than going to the ATM to withdraw
cash, writing checks, and sending gifts the traditional way. And you can manage your PayPal account right from your mobile device. All of this with the security and protection you get from PayPal.

What’s New In This Version:
+ Brand new look and feel!
+ Bump: Easily start by bumping iPhones.
+ Withdraw funds from your PayPal balance.
+ Request Money:
Get paid faster, it’s the easy way to ask for the money you are owed.
+ Split the Check: Instantly split the bill, calculate tip, and request everyone’s share.
+ Collect Money: Ask for contributions from a group for an event,
gift, or cause.
+ Set Reminders: Never miss rent or a bill.
+ Refer the app to a friend

The new update looks really nice and retains the clean interface. It adds more features than before and is easy to use. Not sure how often I’d be using the Bump functionality but it’s a great addition for existing Bump users. The PayPal app is free in the App Store.

Unlock iPhone 3G 3.1.3 - Unlock iPhone 3Gs 3.1.3 (David Lim, Auckland)

Feb 07, 2010 via COMTEX -- iPhone Unlocking Ltd, within just days of the release of the latest firmware version 3.1.3 from Apple, have produced an innovative unlocking application which will enable all iPhone owners to free the network restriction caused by the latest 3.1.3 update.

The 3G iPhone is fast becoming more and more popular as prices are starting to fall. The major downfall is the limited number of networks that are available and the expensive price plans. Several iPhone Unlocking services state that they can Unlock iPhone 3G 3.1.3 (http://www.iphoneunlocking.com) and Unlock iPhone 3Gs 3.1.3 but we have tested their solutions and they have proven very unreliable.

iPhone Unlocking Ltd were formed in mid 2007 around the time of the iPhones initial launch, and have successfully unlocked over 1 million iPhones worldwide. This is unparallelled by any other service in the industry. They have achieved this by combining a very simple solution with a fantastic customer service department that are available 24/7 through many forms of contact including telephone.

The iPhone itself is packed with a wide assortment of features and functions, but it is typically only available on expensive price plans and predetermined networks. This has created anger within the iPhone community as it is believed that the customer deserves the freedom to select their own network provider and price plan.

The wonderful feature of the iPhone Unlocking Software is that upon unlocking your iPhone you will not loose any of the great features and functionality of the iPhone. This provides the iPhone user absolute freedom over network choice and still have a complete fully functioning device.

The Unlock iPhone 3G 3.1.3 and Unlock iPhone 3Gs 3.1.3 (http://www.iphoneunlocking.com) software comes with a full 30 day money back guarantee, lifetime updates and most important of all, lifetime support. If you require first class service at an affordable price, there is only one simple choice you have to make.

Geohot Discovers Working Exploit For iPhone OS 3.1.3 Baseband

We have good news for anyone who accidentally updated to iPhone OS 3.1.3, which in turn updated the baseband on the device. GeoHot, iPhone Hacking expert and creator of popular unlocking and jailbreaking tools, such as Blackra1n and Blacksn0w, has discovered a working exploit for baseband 05.12.01.
Geohot has tweeted the hash tag of the baseband crash “for safekeeping”:
d8b50dc95d7906e3ff6155331a534b55d0f6cac1=good.
In addition, iHackintosh has also published the conversation between Visnet (iHackintosh reader), Geohot and MuscleNerd:
What does geohot tweet mean?
its my bb exploit for safekeeping
geohot: did you turn that over to the dev team or are you doing something with it?
my days of turning things over are done
i hope its different from the one they have
but they prob already have it
its the one i orig wanted to release blacksn0w with
it’s still there in the new bb
yep, just checked
but then opted to use xemn since it was public
Oo, it carries over from 05.11 to 05.12?
why wouldn’t it, apple doesn’t fix things proactivly
geohot we prob should figure out a way to know if we have same exploit double blind, otherwise we may release 2 different ones at same time
any suggestions?
not sure how to do that without making it easy to brute force though
yea, i salted the hash
yeah
hmm maybe if we both hash the stack dump
Can you two take this out of public sight?
the stack itself, not the header before it or the registers after it
muscle: any notice about the exploits are the same ?
we are working on it
cryptography, perfect for people who don’t trust each other
The conversation indicates that both the iPhone Dev Team and Geohot have a working exploit for the latest baseband and could release tools to jailbreak and unlock iPhone OS 3.1.3. Stay tuned!

iPhone Dev Team Discovers Another Exploit For Baseband 05.12.01

The iPhone Dev Team has found another exploit to unlock iPhone OS 3.1.3 baseband – MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev Team has tweeted that just re-discovered a crashing command that yellowsn0w, the iPhone unlocking software was originally going to use.

What does that mean? It means he has found another working exploit for the baseband bundled in iPhone OS 3.1.3, which should help them figure out a way to jailbreak and unlock the latest iPhone OS.
The iPhone hacking community has already discovered two working exploits for the baseband 05.12.01 that is bundled in iPhone OS 3.1.3.
MuscleNerd announced on his Twitter page:
Ha just re-found crashing command yellowsn0w was originally going to use before +stkprof. Apple fixed it *accidentally* in 02.28.00.
some commands have come and gone. some command holes have come and gone. this command has come and gone but not the hole:)
it still seems accidental though :) there are no overt signs that they’ve closed the hole, but the byte alignment kills it
Apple has built in this bizzare intepreter into their baseband.
Why is it in production units? Fun!
It is still not clear whether hey’re talking about the same exploit or a different one.
In any case, the iPhone Dev Team and Geohot have at least one working exploit for the 05.12.01 baseband, unlocking iPhone OS 3.1.3 could soon become a reality rather than a dream!
Stay tuned!

How Tough is your phone?

Putting your life in your handset is risky, especially if you kill it. But at the 2009 MWC, i-mate showed off a handset that can take much more punishment than most.

Named after a US military spec, the 810-F can be dropped from three metres (10 feet), works in temperatures ranging from sub-zero to 60 degrees Celsius, is dustproof, and water resistant.

Dan put its toughness to the test by driving over it in a car. It stayed in one piece and even its touchscreen was still working.

If you prepared to splash out £600 on this handset when it comes out in April, then you too could impress your friends.
One of its useful features is that your data can be protected if you lose it.

"If this device is lost or stolen, you can log in at any place and set a lock, an alarm, and even wipe the data located on the phone at any time," said Michael Cavey, sales director at i-mate. "And if it is damaged we'll replace it."
