Android Market officially passes the 100K apps Mark (tech, news, update, report, review, Auckland, "Abby Technology Limited")

The Android market has just joined the App Store in the prestigious 100K apps club. The news was confirmed by the Android Dev Team through their Twitter account this today so it's official this time.
 

Naturally you can't access all those apps on a single device due to carious restrictions concerning screen resolution, Android version and regional availability, but there will always be enough for you to choose from. And the numbers will only be going up from now on.
 

It took only three months for Android to go from 70 000 to 100 000 apps so that means that an average of 10 000 apps hit the shelves each month. And the share of the free ones among those is still hovering above the 60 percent mark, which is downright impressive. Even games like Angry Birds that come for a fee on other platforms (iOS and webOS) choose the free, add-supported way for their Android versions.

Still some would rightfully point that the Android Market has quite some way ahead to reach the Apple App store and its 300 000+ apps standard but at this point the differences gradually start to lose significance. We can't possibly imagine anyone being able to browse through 100 000 apps, let alone try each one of them.
 

As long as all the important stuff is there, most users won't care if there are 100K or a million apps. And the Google OS official repository has most things perfectly covered. Being a little light on 3D games is probably the only thing that renders it second best at this point.
 

Meanwhile, the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace hit 1000 apps. This might be 100 times less than what the Android Market could offer you but let's not forget that the first WP7-powered smartphones have just started shipping. So, thumbs up! Text-ads on your Blog with BidVertiser.

Nokia unleashes its short movie, shot exclusively on the Nokia N8 (tech, news, report, update, leaked, Auckland)

Nokia presents The Commuter, a funny short film, starring "Slumdog Millionaire" Dev Patel with a cameo by Pam Anderson. Beside the stellar cast, the other thing that's intriguing about the flick is the fact it's shot exclusively on the Nokia N8.

The Commuter is yet another proof of the Nokia N8 camcorder skills. Well, contrast could have been better in some scenes but still, you can hardly tell that the 720p HD movie was shot with a mobile phone.

Now, get the pop corn and dim the lights, will you?

We bet they've used at least a tripod with a fluid video head, a steadicam-type stabilizer adapted for cameraphone use and some specialized video lighting.

Nokia 1100 gets highly sought after for its potential criminal use.

One of the most popular handsets in the world - Nokia 1100 has found itself in the middle of a banking fraud scandal, according to a Dutch investigator. Allegedly, criminals are paying an arm and a leg for working second hand units of the once-50-euro handset that are manufactured in Nokia plant in Bochum, Germany.

Investigators are observing huge amounts of money being offered for the outdated handset recently. The largest recorded sum up to now is 25,000 euro (about 32,000 US dollars), which is about 11 times its weight in gold. According to the investigators the criminals are looking to acquire only units that are manufactured in the Bochum plant of the company.

The supposed reason behind this peculiar requirement is that those handset most probably come with flawed software or hardware, which allows them to be hacked and used to make a working copy of someone else's phone line.

When set up this way, the Nokia 1100 receives the same calls and most importantly text messages that the original recipient gets, without them ever suspecting anything.

The loophole that the criminals are allegedly using is that many European banks now send temporary transaction authentication numbers or mTANs as SMS to the account holders as a security feature for authorizing online money transfers.

This is where the supposedly counterfeit-capable Nokia 1100 handsets step in. As they receive the SMS intended for the authorized account holder, criminals can acquire a working mTAN and initiate a transfer after they have stolen the needed online ID credentials in some other way.

At this stage Nokia have refuted those accusations claiming that they have not identified any flaw or wormhole in their phone software that would allow the alleged use cases.

However, the investigations still continue.

iPhone users to get Skype service (VOIP, Auckland, New Zealand)

Skype has confirmed that iPhone users will be now be able to use its internet telephony service. The firm's native voice over internet protocol (VoIP) application - Skype for iPhone - will be available for download from Apples iTune store on Tuesday. The new service will allow users to make free calls to Skype users, but will charge for calls to other numbers. The UK's first Skype capable handset was launched by Mobile operator 3 on 2 November 2007. Rival applications from Fring and TruPhone are already available for the iPhone. Unlike traditional mobile calls, which are transmitted over a cellular network, VoIP turns your voice into data and sends it over the internet using a wi-fi network. This means the only cost to the user is for sending internet data; for iPhone users this means no cost at all, as they get unlimited internet access within fair usage limitations. VoIP firms will levy a charge for users making calls outside its user base. In the case of Skype, while calling another Skype user will be free, calling an actual phone number via the service will incur a cost. Iphone users will not be able to make Skype calls, either to Skype contacts or to landlines, over the mobile network, something users of Skype on the UK mobile network 3 can do. Watching the pennies Many of Skype's other features - such as video conferencing and the ability to receive a second Skype call - have been left out, although the firm did not rule them out in the future. "We're considering video carefully but we have a really high bar on the quality," said Skype's chief operating officer Scott Durchslag. "If we do it we will have to do it incredibly well." Mr Durchslag said he had high hopes for the application. "The number one request we get from customers is to make Skype available on iPhone," he said. Skype plan to launch a service for BlackBerry users in May.

Samsung Blue Earth Solar-Powered Phone (David Lim, Auckland, New Zealand)

Samsung's the first Solar Powered Full-touch Screen Phone, named Blue Earth($TBA). Samsung develops this green phone to reduce CO2 emissions. It features Solar Panel on the back of the phone, made from recycled plastic extracted from water bottles, recycled packaging; adjusting screen brightness, backlight duration and Bluetooth can all be adjusted in an energy-efficient mode called "Eco mode" and even an "eco walk" function that lets the user count their steps with an in-built pedometer, calculating how much CO2 emissions have been reduced. The Samsung Blue Earth will be available in the UK during the second half of 2009.

Add power to your mobile phone: Qualcomm's SnapDragon

First on the list of common annoyances are underpowered smartphones that take too long to perform tasks or crash when more than two applications are open. One potential answer could be Qualcomm's Snapdragon chipset which its makers claim is about 50% more powerful than those in current smartphones.

The first versions of the chipset run at 1Ghz and help to power hi-res graphics, new user interfaces, while running Windows Mobile.The Toshiba TG01 is the first handset to sport it. Qualcomm is working on a version that runs at 1.5Ghz - which, it claims, will be broadly equivalent to the processors found in most netbooks.

Enrico Salvatori, vice president at Qualcomm, said the chipset's ability to support applications is what makes "the mobile internet user experience compelling". "The Snapdragon is delivering high performance in terms of multimedia, video, high definition, encoding and decoding, and supporting of a camera", he said.

Qualcomm has also developed Mirasol screens that draw their inspiration from structures found in nature. The screens use tiny amounts of battery power and can be seen in bright daylight. Reflective properties on the device's screen produce brighter images outdoors, according to Cheryl Goodman-Schwarzman from Qualcomm MEMS. "Colour comes in to the display, and it reflects back out colour. The brighter the light, the clearer the display," she said.
