E71 & Gmail: How To Set Up IMAP With The Built-In Messaging Application

I have configured and been using my hotmail, clear.net.nz pop mail, vodafone sync mail and Gmail on my Nokia E71. They all work perfectly either via my Vdoafone 3G GPRS or WiFi at home/work. This had improve my respond time to my business associate's emails based at different world location. With the help of portable web mail, I can conduct my online business with ease!

Here are the steps you take for setting up Gmail on your Nokia E71 using the built in messaging application. I find this solution to be very good, except that it doesn't download the full emails automatically, only the headers. It's not really a huge problem as it only takes 2-3 seconds to retrieve the email.

Reminder (thanks to Rita): With the E71 you don't need to do all these settings to set up Gmail imap, the E71 will find all them for you when you enter your username and password. But if your having problems like I was when outgoing messages or anything else you can go into your settings for that email account and make sure they all look like what you see below. Make sure your security ports are set right. Steps for setting up Gmail, straight from Google:

To configure IMAP for your Symbian S60 device, just follow these steps:

1. Enable IMAP in your Gmail settings.
2. Select 'Messaging' > 'Options' > 'Settings' > 'E-mail' > 'Mailboxes.'

3. If you have never set up email on your phone before, select 'Yes' to define a new mailbox. If you already have other mailboxes, select 'Options' and then 'New mailbox.'

4. Select 'Start' to begin the setup wizard.

5. Select 'IMAP4' and then 'Next.'

6. Enter your full email address (including '@gmail.com') as the email address and select 'Next.' Google Apps users, enter your full address in the format 'username@your_domain.com.'

7. Enter 'imap.gmail.com' as the incoming mail server and select 'Next.'

8. Enter 'smtp.gmail.com' as the outgoing mail server and select 'Next.'
9. Select the appropriate access point and then 'Next.'
10. Enter a descriptive name for the email account mailbox name.

11. Once your mailbox is set up, select it from the email mailbox settings screen.

12. Select 'Connection settings' > 'Incoming e-mail.'

13. Enter your address (including '@gmail.com' or '@your_domain.com') and password.

14. Select 'SSL/TLS' for your security (ports) and define your port as '993.'

15. Select 'Back.'

16. Select 'Outgoing e-mail.'

17. Enter your email address (including '@gmail.com' or '@your_domain.com') and password.

18. Select 'StartTLS' for your security (ports) and define your port as '587.'

19. Select 'Back' and change any other settings according to your preferences.

That's just for getting it set up. Once it's all set up you can configure some of your own settings. For instance under Automatic Retrievel I set it for 15 minutes and I can close my email inbox yet it stays connected and pushes new mail through just as it arrives in my real inbox. If for some reason the data connection is broken it will automatically reconnect after 15 minutes.
All emails are synced perfectly with your real inbox almost instantly. If you want to delete something from your phone you can but if you choose "phone and server" it will simply archive it in Gmail, which is actually quite handy I think.

Are any of you using this as your email solution? Please leave your comments.

Every Noka E71 owner will kill for this (David Lim, Auckland, New Zealand, NZ)

Ever since I started this blog I haven't had much access to a Windows computer. My hard drive crashed and I had to use Linux Ubuntu for almost half a year. All the PC applications that Nokia makes only work on Windows or Mac, no love for Linux. So I really haven't been able to try out some of the cool features like Files On Ovi.

What Is Files On Ovi?

Basically it allows you to access files on your computer directly on your Nokia E71 when your away from home (or work, if your company allows it). You have to install a "connector" on your computer, and as of right now it's only compatible with Windows. According to Nokia,

With Files, you use your mobile phone to view, download and send the photos, documents and files stored on your personal computer, anytime, anywhere. You can also use any other Internet-connected computer to access your computer's files.

Great thing is you can also use this to view your computers files from any other computer with a data connection, not just your E71.

By far, this is the best took that helps me to supercharge my GDI online marketing business and had help to improve my long term income!

Right now you can access your files for free if your computer is on and connected to the internet. But if you want to be able to access your files even if your computer is off or disconnected from the internet, you can sign up for a pay-based subscription and have 10gb's of storage. You can try that and get 60 days free.

The other day I tested this service while at work. I was missing a song I recently added to my computer and wanted to hear it on my E71. Remembering that I left my computer on at home, I was able to view my files. Check out the sceenshots below. You'll notice my new Windows computer is called "The Monstor", going along with my 22 inch monitor that I'm loving right now.

Music Files On My Computer

Download Entire Folders At A Time

I downloaded that entire folder and calculated the transfer time at around 22 minutes - not bad at all for 43.9 megabytes. I've decide this should be a "must have" tool on everyone's E71. I've already used it multiple times to pull off excel and word documents from my computer when out and about.

To login you must have a "Nokia Account", which is the same one you use to login to Ovi Calendar & Contacts. This is not the same account as your Share On Ovi account.

Do you live in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, or Australia? If so, you can join the Files On Ovi campaign for S60 Ambassadors. Talk about the service with your friends, family, co-workers, etc and just go back to your S60 account and write up a quick report of each interaction. The more reports you write the more points you get. If your in the Top 50 list for submitted reports you get prizes (bluetooth goodies). 2 Samsung INNOV8 (i8510) Samsung INNOV8 (i8510) Editors’ Choice

The INNOV8 is loaded with features and sports massive storage. If you're in the market for a mobile phone that can do just about anything the INNOV8 should be on your shortlist. 28/07/2008

3 Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 Sony Ericsson Xperia X1

Thee X1's good looks and strong hardware are hampered by frequent performance lag, an unintuitive user experience and its jaw-dropping price tag. 11/02/2008

4 LG Renoir KC910 LG Renoir KC910
With an excellent 8-megapixel camera and a finger-friendly touchscreen, the Renoir is exactly what it sets out to be: one of the best camera phones of the year. 26/08/2008

5 Nokia 6600 Slide Nokia 6600 Slide
If you're not bothered with having every feature under the sun and want a phone that's small and easy to use, the Nokia 6600 Slide is it. 29/04/2008

7 Samsung Omnia Samsung Omnia
In terms of features the Omnia stands out as one of the best smartphones to date. It's a shame this doesn't translate into a phone we'd enjoy using from day to day. 05/09/2008

8 Nokia N96 Nokia N96 It's a little slimmer and it has loads of storage, but Nokia's latest flagship model has little to justify its top-shelf price tag. 12/02/2008

9 BlackBerry Storm 9500 BlackBerry Storm 9500
The Storm's clickable display has given us confidence in touchscreens we haven't enjoyed before now. It won't be for everyone, but those who master this system will be rewarded with an excellent smartphone experience. 09/10/2008

10 Nokia 6500 Slide Nokia 6500 Slide
The Nokia 6500 Slide is an attractive 3G phone, but despite features like video-out doesn't really offer anything enticing enough to buy one. 04/09/2007
