Is Geohot Working on Unlocking Baseband 05.12.01 for iPhone 3.1.3? ("iPhone Repair", "David Lim", Auckland)

Did Geohot change his mind? A few weeks ago he said that he would not work on OS 3.1.3 but what he tweeted yesterday suggests otherwise.Apparently Musclenerd and Geohot are talking to each other to figure out whether his exploit is the same as the one discovered by Sherriff a few days ago. This unlock would sure be a life saver to the many iPhone owners who “accidentally” updated their device to 3.1.3.

Using your Apple iPhone 3GS with your bicycle! (Auckland, tech, news, report, "iPhone Repair")

The iPhone is loaded with amazing tools for cyclists like GPS tracking, and apps to measure speed and distance, but without a way to use it while you ride it’s as useless as a blogger with a degree in communications. The Biologic Bike Mount for iPhone puts it on your handlebars where you can see it. It’s a weatherproof case with a touch sensitive membrane so you can still use your iPhone while keeping it safe from the elements.

So You "Accidentally" Upgraded to 3.1.3. Now what?

This thread's purpose is to provide a central place for simple answers to the single most-asked question on this board at the moment, namely "OMG! I just Upgraded to 3.1.3 without checking with people first to see whether it was safe! What do I do now?" Because the situation is different for every iPhone model, I have decided to write up a post with answers to the question.
iPhone 2G
Jailbreak? Yes
Unlock? Yes

Relax, you're golden. The original iPhone has been permanently pwned, and nothing Apple does can prevent your jailbreaking or unlocking your phone. If you have upgraded your phone, you will have lost your jailbreak and unlock, but you can easily get it back by running redsn0w 0.9.3. When it asks you to point it to the firmware currently installed on your iPhone, you will have to "trick" it by pointing it to the 3.1.2 ipsw instead. Redsn0w will jailbreak your phone and install BootNeuter, which you can use to unlock your phone.

iPhone 3G
Jailbreak? Yes
Unlock? Probably No
You can jailbreak your phone using redsn0w 0.9.3. When it asks you to point it to the firmware currently installed on your iPhone, you will have to "trick" it by pointing it to the
3.1.2 ipsw instead.

Sadly there is currently no way to unlock the new baseband installed with this firmware upgrade, and for most people it is impossible to downgrade the baseband. A small percentage of 3G owners (only those who purchased their 3G iPhones in the first weeks after release) may be able to downgrade their baseband using Fuzzyband, which has just been updated to work with phones stuck on the 5.12.01 baseband. The only way to know for certain whether this will work for you is to install Fuzzyband from Cydia and try it.
Sadly, if you are not one of those fortunate few early adopters for whom Fuzzyband will work, there is currently no way to unlock your phone. This means that you can only use your phone on the carrier it is officially locked to (unless your phone is factory unlocked). There is not currently any prospect for unlocking your phone.
iPhone 3GSJailbreak? Maybe
Unlock? No

Whether you can jailbreak your iPhone depends on whether you were previously jailbroken and have your phone's ECID SHSHs on file in Cydia (you can check this by opening Cydia on your phone and seeing if it says in green at the top of the main page: "This device has SHSHs on file for iPhone OS: 3.1.2"). If you do have this information on file, you will be able to downgrade your phone to 3.1.2 using Saurik's server to sign your install request (follow instructions here). You will then be able to jailbreak your phone using redsn0w or blackra1n.

If you do not have your SHSH on file, you cannot downgrade your phone's firmware at this time, and you will therefore be unable to jailbreak your phone. All of the 3GS jailbreaking tools currently available rely on a USB exploit which has been patched in the 3.1.3 firmware. Since you cannot downgrade to 3.1.2 or earlier, you are out of luck for jailbreaking at the present time.

Sadly, whether you can jailbreak or not, there is currently no way to unlock the new baseband installed with this firmware upgrade. This means that you can only use your phone on the carrier it is officially locked to (unless your phone is factory unlocked). There is not currently any prospect for unlocking your phone.

Lock Your Spot before 15 May, 2010 and change your life 360 degree from 16 May 2010. It will change the way you feel, act and live! Tell your friends now or someone else will!

iPhone users to get Skype service (VOIP, Auckland, New Zealand)

Skype has confirmed that iPhone users will be now be able to use its internet telephony service. The firm's native voice over internet protocol (VoIP) application - Skype for iPhone - will be available for download from Apples iTune store on Tuesday. The new service will allow users to make free calls to Skype users, but will charge for calls to other numbers. The UK's first Skype capable handset was launched by Mobile operator 3 on 2 November 2007. Rival applications from Fring and TruPhone are already available for the iPhone. Unlike traditional mobile calls, which are transmitted over a cellular network, VoIP turns your voice into data and sends it over the internet using a wi-fi network. This means the only cost to the user is for sending internet data; for iPhone users this means no cost at all, as they get unlimited internet access within fair usage limitations. VoIP firms will levy a charge for users making calls outside its user base. In the case of Skype, while calling another Skype user will be free, calling an actual phone number via the service will incur a cost. Iphone users will not be able to make Skype calls, either to Skype contacts or to landlines, over the mobile network, something users of Skype on the UK mobile network 3 can do. Watching the pennies Many of Skype's other features - such as video conferencing and the ability to receive a second Skype call - have been left out, although the firm did not rule them out in the future. "We're considering video carefully but we have a really high bar on the quality," said Skype's chief operating officer Scott Durchslag. "If we do it we will have to do it incredibly well." Mr Durchslag said he had high hopes for the application. "The number one request we get from customers is to make Skype available on iPhone," he said. Skype plan to launch a service for BlackBerry users in May.
