RIM BlackBerry Monaco Touch and Sedonda outed (leaked, leaks, tech, news, report, update, 2011)

Images and specifications for new hitherto unseen BlackBerry messaging phones have surfaced online, as it looks to build on the huge sales for the Torch and the warm critical reception afforded its latest operating system.

Unearthed by Crackberry, the Monaco Touch features a 3.7-inch touchscreen, plus 4GB of internal memory, a none too shabby five megapixel camera and a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm processor to keep everything ticking over smoothly.

And in line with the highest-end smartphones we’re seeing of late (CF: the Google Nexus S), it’ll also pack support for Near Field Communication (NFC) technology for contactless payments and tethering too.

Specs for the second leaked smartie, the BlackBerry Sedonda, are thinner on the ground. But we do know that it’ll also pack NFC support, plus A-GPS, an 800Mhz processor and all your standard connectivity options (think: Bluetooth and Wi-Fi).

UK availability and carriers for both handsets have yet to be confirmed. But they’re expected to drop around August or September this year.

Apple iPad 2: No microSD card support feature, according to insider (leaked, leaks, news, report, tech)

Speculation that the second-gen iPad will feature support for microSD cards is wide of the mark, it has been claimed.

Reports that the iPad 2 would offer expandable memory surfaced back in December, when leaked shots of cases for the device showed an opening in the upper left-hand corner.

An inside source whom AppleInsider “trusts on matters such as these” has rebuffed the suggestions, claiming that the slot is nothing of the sort. In fact, the slot is simply a new location for the iPad’s micro SIM tray, he says.

News of specs for Apple’s tablet comes as fellow iFansite 9to5Mac, claims to have got hold of an iPad 2 display from a Chinese third-party components maker. According to the site, the screen is lighter and up to 1mm thinner than the current-gen slate.

Other rumoured features for the tablet include dual cameras, a unibody design, more on board storage and a 2GHz processor to keep everything ticking over real nice, like.

Get your saltshakers ready kids. Word on the streets is that Nokia, the world’s biggest mobile corp. is set to do a deal with the devil, sorry, Microsoft, that it will announce this time next week.

Nokia boss Stephen Elop, who previously headed Microsoft’s business division before taking the helm at Espoo, is due to make the groundbreaking announcement at a press call in London on the 11th.

Carolina Milanesi, a Gartner analyst, said: “I don’t know if this is just wishful thinking, but it could definitely be the big announcement we are expecting.”

Wishful thinking or not, it was enough to cause Nokia shares to rise 1.5 per cent at the close of trading in Helsinki yesterday – an impressive bump of four per cent since news of the development first surfaced on Monday.

Nokia has been hinting for a while that it is considering “multiple ecosystem patterns”, which tech watchers interpreted, with good reason, as a potential, if limited, adoption of Android.

However, it seems the Finnish giant isn’t too keen on handing over the keys to smartphone supremacy to Google just yet and would rather chance it with Microsoft’s still-new Windows Phone 7 platform where it has a greater opportunity to dominate the lion's share of smartphone sales.

And from Microsoft's perspective at least, having major players like HTC, Samsung and LG already on board with WP7, and now catching the biggest fish in the pond of them all, right in brink of what seemed like an inevitable partnership with Google could seriously knock the wind out of Android’s sails.

Of course, it’s still possible that Nokia could yet adopt Android at a later date and the alliance with Microsoft is still just a rumour. Watch this space like a hawk for more information next Friday.
