Seven Technologies That Will Rock 2011 (prediction, news, tech, update, Auckland)

Article by Erick Schonfeld, TechCrunch.com

So here we are in a new decade, and the technologies that are now available to us continue to engage (and enthrall) in fascinating ways. The rise and collision of several trends—social, mobile, touch computing, geo, cloud—keep spitting out new products and technologies which keep propelling us forward. Below I highlight seven technologies that are ready to tip into the mainstream 2011.

Before I get into my predictions, let's see how I did last year, when I wrote "Ten Technologies That Will Rock 2010." Some of my picks were spot on: the Tablet (hello, iPad), Geo (Foursquare, Gowalla, Facebook Places, mobile location-aware search, etc.), Realtime Search (it became an option on Google) and Android (now even bigger than the iPhone). Some are still playing out: HTML5 (it's made great strides, but isn't quite here yet), Augmented Reality (lots of cool apps have AR functionality, but for the most part it is still a parlor trick), Mobile Video (FaceTime and streaming video apps pushed it forward), Mobile Transactions (Square and other transaction processing options came onto the scene), and Social CRM (Salesforce pushed Chatter, and tons of social CRM startups pushed their wares, but enterprises are always slow to adopt). And one got pushed to 2011: Chrome OS (we are still waiting).

What's in store for 2011? Some of these themes will continue to evolve, and some new ones will gain currency. Here are seven technologies poised to rock the new year:

Web Video On Your TV: We've already seen many attempts to turn the Internet into a video-delivery pipe to rival cable TV: Google TV, Apple TV, the Boxee Box, Roku, and a slew of "Internet-enabled" TVs.  None of them are quite yet cable killers, but they are seeding the market with simple ways to bring Internet video to your large-screen TV in the living room. The more cable-quality video that becomes available over the Web via streaming services such as Netflix, Vudu, or iTunes, the more that people will turn to Web when they are looking for something to watch. This trend is not about surfing the Web on your TV. Nobody wants to do that. It is about using the Internet as an alternative way to deliver movies and TV shows to your flat-screen TV. Even the cable companies will dip their toes into the Internet delivery waters (or plunge deeper if they already have their toes wet). What looks like a pale competitor to cable today will be a lot more viable in a short, twelve months.
Quora Will Have Its Twitter Moment: Social Q&A site Quora may be the current darling of Silicon Valley, but not a lot of people beyond the insular tech startup world actually use it yet. That will start to change in 2011, which I believe will be the year Quora has its Twitter moment and start to really take off. Quora represents a bigger technology trend, which is the layering of an interest graph on top of people's social graph. On Quora, you can follow not only people, but topics and questions. It defines the world by your interests, not just the people you may know or admire. This is a powerful concept and is not limited to Quora (both Twitter and Facebook also want to own the interest graph), but Quora is designed from the ground up to expose and help you explore your interests. It is addictive, and as it reaches a critical mass of early users, this will be the year it emerges from its shell much like Twitter did in 2007.
Mobile Social Photo Apps:The end of 2010 witnessed a spate of mobile photo apps including Instagram, PicPlz and Path. They all take advantage of several massive key trends: the growth of iPhone and Android, the ubiquity of decent cell phone cameras, GPS, and existing social networks like Facebook, Twitter, and Foursquare. Each of these apps is built for mobile first. They let you take a picture, mark your location, and share it with your social network (sometimes public, sometimes private). With Instagram and PicPLz, you can choose a filter to make humdrum pics look more exciting or capture a mood. By building on top of existing social networks like Twitter and Foursquare, they are making popular new ways to use those services. Instead of simply checking in, now you can do a photo checkin (even Foursquare lets you do that now). Already Instagram is one of the most popular photo apps in iTunes. Sharing photos is pretty much a universal impulse, and these apps make it easier and more fun.
Mobile Wallets: If you could use your cell phone as a credit card, would you? Everyone from Apple and Google to Nokia want to make that a reality and tap into the mobile payments market. Both Apple and Google are exploring this opportunity. Google bought mobile payments startup Zetawire to gain experience and the latest Android phone, the Nexus S, comes with an NFC chip—the same kind that is embedded into credit cards and lets you pay by waving it over a wireless reader. The iPhone 5 also may come equipped with an NFC chip, and Apple was sniffing around mobile payments startup BOKU last year for a possible acquisition. It is going to take more than just NFC chips in every phone to make mobile payments a reality, but efforts by the major players this year should begin to move the needle.
Context-Aware Apps: Whether it's search, mobile, or social apps and services, the most useful apps people will keep coming back to are the ones which help people cut through the increasing clutter of the Internet. Apps that are aware of the context in which they are being used will serve up better filtered information. When you search on your mobile phone, that means you get local results and local offers served up first. If you are on a service like Quora that understands your interest graph, it means that you are only shown topics that you care about, sorted in realtime. If you are on a news site, you will see the most shared links from people in you follow on Twitter or are connected to on Facebook. Music and movie services will similarly surface social recommendations. In a world of information overload, context is king.
Open Places Database: Every mobile app, it seems, taps into the geo capabilities of phones to pinpoint your exact location and show you what is around you. (Incidentally, that is another example of a context-aware app). But there is a lot of duplication going on, with everyone from Google to Facebook to Foursquare creating their own database of places. It would make much more sense if there was an open places database that any company could both pull from and contribute to. While we are not there yet, we are making progress towards a more open places database, or at least a federated one. Factual is providing some of the data for Facebook Places and creating a places database is a major focus for the company; MapQuest (owned by AOL, as is TechCrunch) is adopting OpenStreetMaps (which could very well become the central places database with more resources and development); and Foursquare lets other apps pull from its places database through its API. There are economic reasons why some companies don't want to participate (controlling the places database makes it easier to serve up local offers), but expect to see this movement pick up steam in 2011.
The Streaming Cloud: As all media moves to the cloud, more and more people will stream their movies and music whenever they want to any device. I've already mentioned the forces that will bring Web video streaming to your TV, but those movies and TV shows should also be available on your iPads, Android Tablets, or even mobile phones if you want. Expiring downloads will still make sense for plane trips and other places where the network is spotty, but you will manage your subscriptions and collections in the cloud. Think Netflix streaming applied to all media. If Google or Apple can convince the record companies to come along for the ride, the streaming revolution will hit music as well, with both working on jukebox-in-the-sky services. Why would you want to bother with managing all the download rights for the songs you buy from iTunes between your iPhone, iPad, laptop, and your wife's computer, when you could just sign in form anywhere and start streaming? Plenty have tried with varying degrees of success and failure (Rhapsody, Rdio, Spotify), but it will take someone with the negotiating muscle of Apple or Google to finally bring streaming music to the masses.
What technologies do you think will make it big this year?

Google Android passes Apple's iPhone in total US subscribers

Strong sales of phones running Google Android throughout 2010 have managed to push the mobile platform past Apple's iPhone in total active subscribers for the first time, according to comScore.

The research firm released its latest figures this week, revealing that Android was the second-largest mobile platform in November of 2010. Google jumped past Apple even though the iPhone did not lose any share of the market, percentage wise.

Android continued its fast growth, taking another 6.4 points from its previous total in September to give it 26 percent of the U.S. market of smartphone subscribers. Android now only trails Research in Motion, which lost 4.1 points to hold 33.5 percent of the market.

Apple and the iPhone came in third, representing 25 percent of the total domestic market. The Cupertino, Calif., company gained 0.8 points from its share in September.

Of course, Apple's smartphone presence consists solely of the iPhone, while handsets running Google Android are represented by a number of manufacturers and many more devices.

Behind Apple was Microsoft, which slipped from 10.8 percent in September to 9 percent in November. Microsoft's new mobile platform, Windows Phone 7, launched in November.

In all, comScore found that there were 234 million Americans ages 13 and over using mobile devices, with just 61.5 million of those being smartphone owners. But the smartphone market continues to grow, increasing in size by 10 percent in November, versus the previous survey from September.

Quarterly sales of Android phones were first reported to have passed the iPhone in May of 2010. The new data from comScore represents devices actively being used, rather than current sales figures.

Bonuses help Apple's Tim Cook earn $59M in 2010, Steve Jobs keeps $1 salary

Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook earned a huge pay increase in 2010, thanks to cash bonuses and stock-based compensation, bringing his total earnings to more than $59 million, while CEO Steve Jobs kept his traditional $1 annual salary.

The compensation was revealed on Friday in the company's 2011 Proxy Statement, filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Last March, Cook, 50, was given a "special award" to recognize his his "outstanding performance" in overseeing the company's day-to-day operations in 2009 when Jobs was on a medical leave of absence. He earned 75,000 restricted shares of AAPL stock, as well as a $5 million discretionary bonus.

Cook earned an annual salary of about $800,000, and added to his $52.3 million in stock awards and $5 million cash bonus, the chief operating officer received a total compensation of $59.1 million in fiscal 2010. It was a huge pay increase for Cook, who earned $1.64 million total in 2009.

Apple's Compensation Committee also determined in September that it was appropriate to increase Cook's base salary from $800,000 to $900,000, a raise that will be reflected in his compensation for the 2011 fiscal year.

Also given a raise last year was Bruce D. Sewell, who took over as Apple's general counsel and senior vice president in 2009. Sewell earned $650,000 in 2010, and will receive a $50,000 pay raise to $700,000 this year.

Not receiving a pay raise was Jobs, who has famously kept an annual salary of $1 per year since he rejoined Apple in 1997. Jobs remains well compensated, however, as he owns about 5.5 million shares of AAPL stock.

"Since rejoining the company in 1997, Mr. Jobs has not sold any of his shares of the Company's stock," the filing reads. "Mr. Jobs holds no unvested equity awards. The Company recognizes that Mr. Jobs's level of stock ownership significantly aligns his interests with shareholders' interests."

Apple's annual shareholder meeting will be held at the company's "Town Hall" (Building 4) at its Cupertino Calif., campus on Feb. 23 at 10 a.m. Pacific Standard Time. Admission to the meeting is allowed to shareholders on a first-come, first-served basis.

Next Generation ‘iPhone 5′ Won’t Support 4G LTE Networks; Will Be Dual-Mode CDMA/GSM (tech, news, update, leaked)

January 9th, 2011:  While the arrival of Apple's iPhone on Verizon's network is widely speculated, people are wondering whether the Verizon iPhone will support Verizon's 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) network, which will be rolled out by the end of the year.

AT&T has also announced plans of converting its network to LTE by 2011.

According to TechCrunch, the CDMA iPhone will not support LTE and according to their sources, even the fifth generation iPhone will not support LTE networks

Incidentally, this is similar to what Apple did with the original iPhone, which worked only AT&T's 2.5G EDGE network. Apple launched the iPhone 3G a good one year after the first generation iPhone  was launched. This, even though there were 3G networks back in 2007 when the original iPhone arrived!

Apple on the other hand is reportedly working on the next generation  iPhone that would support both GSM and CDMA networks so that it can work on all carriers worldwide.

This could mean that you would not be seeing a 4G ready iPhone until mid 2012, which might be disappointing news to iPhone fans, especially when Sprint already has the HTC EVO 4G in its lineup.

But Steve Cheney an outside contributor to TechCrunch believes Apple might be taking the right decision to wait for the technology to mature:

[..] as we cut through the hype on LTE, I believe Apple's decision to wait may be the right one. While the carriers are promising LTE as an upgrade path that will drive new applications and higher speeds, the reality is that 4G deployments will take much longer than the carriers are letting on.

Apple doesn't want to mess with the first generation of LTE chipsets, since they will be bulky and power hungry[..]

What do you think? Will it be a deal-breaker if iPhone 5 doesn't support 4G LTE networks? [Via TechCrunch]

Next Generation Apple iPhone 4 Or CDMA iPhone Casing Leaked? (apps, iOS, news, report, Update)

Folks at Boy Genius Report have stumbled on a YouTube video published by a smartphone parts company called Global Direct Parts, in which they were comparing casing from iPhone 4 and another iPhone model, which they claim could be the CDMA iPhone, which is widely speculated to be offered on Verizon's network or the fifth generation iPhone that is expected to be launched in June.
The video has since been removed from YouTube, which indicates that it could indeed be the legitimate and was likely removed from YouTube at Apple's request.
The device has a micro-SIM slot, so if it is legitimate, it is more likely to be the fifth generation iPhone rather than a CDMA iPhone or it could support both GSM and CDMA or its just fake.
It has a similar stainless steel band as iPhone 4, which serves as the antenna system, which had resulted in the Antennagate controversy after iPhone 4 was launched due to complaints of reception issues.
However, the breakpoints in the frame between the two antenna's has move to different locations. If the parts are indeed legitimate then it suggests that Apple may be planning to tweak the design of the antenna system.
The change in position of the break point seems to have also resulted in the slight adjustment in the position of the mute switch.
Global Direct is also claiming that it will release more information on LCDs and motherboards of the device next week. We'll keep you posted if we get any further information.

Window 7 Smartphone review: HTC HD7 (tech, news, report, update, Auckland)

Introduction

There's no such thing as a small WP 7 phone. However, 4.3 inches of screen estate are really something else. The best case scenario: the HTC HD7 is the phone you've been waiting for. The worst case scenario: it's too big to fail.

The HTC HD7 was inevitable. Was it not the first Windows Phone 7 ever rumored? And rightly so. There's no phone too big or too powerful for Windows Phone 7. In fact, if you ask Microsoft they'd say the bigger the better. HTC – on their part – didn't have to think too hard. They simply skipped right to number seven.

Come to think of it, it may as well have been exactly with the HTC HD2 in mind that Microsoft laid down the law about the Windows Phone 7 required hardware. Effectively, HTC had a Windows Phone 7 flagship on standby for nearly a year – waiting for as much as a nod from Microsoft to let it off the leash. Anyway, as we've seen on a number of occasions, this whole thing is about getting things done on the biggest mobile screen possible. And the HTC HD7's best course of action is to ensure no surprises.

Key features:

  • 4.3" 16M-color capacitive LCD touchscreen of WVGA resolution (480 x 800 pixels)
  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support
  • Dual-band 3G with HSDPA (7.2 Mbps) and HSUPA (2Mbps)
  • Windows Phone 7 operating system
  • 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, 576MB RAM, 512MB ROM
  • 5 megapixel autofocus camera with dual-LED flash, geotagging
  • 720p video recording @ 25fps
  • 8GB of built-in storage
  • Standard 3.5mm audio jack
  • Standard microUSB port (charging)
  • Dolby Mobile and SRS sound enhancement
  • Wi-Fi b/g/n
  • Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP
  • Accelerometer for screen auto rotation
  • Office document editor
  • Facebook integration and cloud services
  • Built-in A-GPS receiver
  • Stereo FM Radio with RDS
  • Comes with HTC Hub and exclusive HTC apps
  • Voice-to-text functionality
  • Kickstand with trademark yellow accents
  • Great audio quality

Main disadvantages:

  • High screen response time causes visible ghosting
  • Non-expandable storage
  • No lens protection
  • Quite heavy at 162 g (not that we mind)
  • Somewhat susceptible to the "antenna death grip" (signal drops by at least two bars)

WP7-specific limitations

  • No system-wide file manager
  • No Bluetooth file transfers
  • No USB mass storage mode
  • Limited third-party apps availability
  • No Flash (nor Silverlight) support in the browser
  • Too dependent on Zune software for file management and syncing
  • No video calls
  • New ringtones available only through the Marketplace
  • Music player lacks equalizer presets
  • No multitasking
  • No copy/paste
  • No DivX/XviD video support (automatic transcoding provided by Zune software)
  • No sign of free Bing maps Navigation so far
  • No internet tethering support
  • No handwriting recognition support

Alright, one thing we can be sure of – the HTC HD7 is playing strictly by the Microsoft book in terms of hardware. On the other hand, it does look like a simple copy/paste job. You know, WP7 phones have a hard time demonstrating a personality. The HD7 has the extra task of identifying itself as something different from the HD2.

The brand new OS is the right place to start. In terms of hardware, the kickstand is certainly an eye-catcher – not to mention it tells you're dealing with a phone that will keep you entertained. Next on the list is the HTC Hub and the exclusive apps it offers.

It still seems the HTC HD7 offers little in the way of creativity. It will be up to the other WP7 phones in the HTC portfolio to do that. The HD7 might just be supposed to be a mere display of power – the one that completes their grand slam of massive screens.

A touch of Walkman: Sony Ericsson Yendo (mobile phone, pad, tech, news, report, Auckland)

Introduction

It looks like the XPERIA X10 mini but acts like what it is – a full-touch feature phone. This is obviously nothing really to shout about as there are hundreds of them around now. It's a first for Sony Ericsson but that's not what makes it special either.

The Sony Ericsson Yendo will not stand being treated like just another touchscreen dumbphone. That Walkman badge commands a different level of respect. Now, does it really or is it what the Yendo likes to think?

There isn't much this little fella can actually promise you. But you'll be glad to hear the Sony Ericsson Yendo can keep its word. The Walkman logo implies above average sonic experience that the phone does well to deliver.

Here is what else to expect from the Sony Ericsson Yendo. It isn't much but there's enough to be excited about in terms of social skills and a positive personality.

Key features

  • Ultra compact
  • Dual-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support
  • Touch-friendly four corner UI
  • 2.6" capacitive touchscreen of QVGA resolution
  • 2 megapixel fixed-focus camera with video recording
  • Standard microUSB port for charging and data
  • Stereo Bluetooth with A2DP
  • microSD card slot with support for up to 16GB
  • 3.5mm-compatible audio jack
  • Facebook and Twitter apps
  • Wide range of color versions
  • Attractive price

Main disadvantages

  • No 3G, Wi-Fi
  • Smallish, low-res display
  • Sluggish user interface
  • Basic music player (for a Walkman phone)
  • Disappointing camera
  • No file browser
  • No multi-tasking
  • No accelerometer for auto-screen rotation

The Yendo is the first feature phone to come with the Four corner UI, as seen on the XPERIA X10 mini. While it is offering little new, it's still nice looking and intuitive. And that is very important when it comes to touch phones. The expected price of around 100 euro is another point in favor. And the Walkman branding makes it all the sweeter.

As for the other features, they're mostly nice to have but not essential in a package of this kind. Yes, there is a camera on board for example, but with limited functionality and unimpressive image quality.

he touchscreen is on the small size and the resolution is low. On the other hand, the user interface is both thumbable and eye-pleasing so you might not notice the screen's downsides.

You're welcome to follow us on the next page, as we discover the Yendo. The invitation is still good even if you think there isn't much to discover. There're many people shopping for basic touch phones. We guess a Walkman phone that fits the description is sure to draw crowds.  This sponsored by Abby Technology Limited - Your mobile phone and PDA repair professional.

8-1-2011 Apple iPhine 3 GS 16GB Digitizer Replacement Repair

Client drive from Waiheke Island to Mt Roskill and submitted his iPhone 3GS for repair. According to the client, he said that he was nearly conned by smooth talking crook in Auckland Central who claims ti be the "Expert iPhone" repair (yeah, right; pigs can fly too). This crook asked over the phone for $80 inspection fee plus $249 to replace to damaged digitizer. That is a total of $329! What an idiot, why don't he just go and rob a bank?
It is noted this crook is very shallow person and has no substance at all besides he fake answers and bullshit experience on repair (or stealing parts?) This loser tend to produce heaps of light fake laughers and dry or irrelevant stories about his business empire (one monkey show on a run down shack?)
Most idiots in life always assume others are stupid and blind or have no brains at all. They spilled so much rubbish out of their foul mouths without stopping to think.

Mobile Phone Repair, Auckland. 8-1-2011

weekend lunch meeting with main dude of the leading insurance company at KFC, Auckland, New Zealand. We discussed about insurance claimed for mobile phone repair, Goigle Android network unlocking and the recents victims who had their iPhone 4G damaged by a deranged person in Auckland Central. According to the victims, that semi-pro's operating premises looks like a $2 Shop with heaps if junk displayed (trying to impress unknowing victims?)
Time is running out for this con and the victims wish that he will rot in jail. What a sad story, a loser trying to hurt, cheat people who trusted him and cheating innocent Kiwi iPhine 4 users.
They say when this matter is in court, many will be surprise how many phone retailers will be shocked to be associated with this crook. His do call "success rate" if iphone repair us below 5%. He kill or swap motherboards or expensive parts on the 95% of it! Go figure out!

Sat, 8th January 2011 -- What a beautiful day in Mt Roskill, Auckland and windy too. Skippy, our pet is getting ready to go the park to soak in the sun. There will be a meeting of iPhone user group in Auckland Domain this afternoon. A handful of angry victims us comparing notes and planning the next move ti file a group report to the media and authorities soon. These iPhone 4G users had been screwed when they fell victim to a crook in Auckland Central to have their iPhone repaired. Most if their motherboard had been swapped or their iPhone 4G killed. They say that crook looks like an AIDS carrier, has skin over the bones only with evil beady little eyes. Hope the picture will be shown in NZ Herald.
If you read this, please search on the net, on Facebook, forums to join the victim support groups. Any ideas, thoughts, legal advice will really help to nail this sickening crook and put him in jail soon.
We cannot imagine how low can a person get to rip off innocent customers in Auckland, New Zealand.

7-Jan-2011. A returning client from Germany. He had saved his from bring conned by the Chinaman in Auckland Central. Client called that loser up; as usual he demanded $85 to insect the iPhone. This rip-off monkey cannot even replace and LCD properly and do not know how to unlock anything above 3.1.3 and still want to keep on cheating customers.

Last night, the pariah loser jumped out from bush like a mad dig and forced himself to people's private property. He had been killing people's iPhone 4G on Auckland since November, 2010. We wonder if he has mental problem as he was so desperate. He us a failure in life and the worst rip-off con in phone repair. He had betrayed our trust, stolen item shipped to his address. Now want his victims to help put? If want want more info, please text (021) 117-2222 and we will share with you more. We winder what kind of father he has, must be a career criminal to train a such a loser in life.
